Written during the Coronavirus crisis as the subject for a music video, this harmonically rich, contemporary calypso is very lyrical, with a punchy chorus, a variation over the verse, and intro and coda. Parts are mostly only moderately challenging, with one or two "hot spots" that players will get after some practice. The demo is the full music video.

It is in the key of G (generally), and is based on three different Brazilian grooves. There is one full AABBC chorus of written out (or improvised) solo passages for individual players, so everyone (including bass) gets  their own  few seconds in the spotlight.

Like Acadia Sunset, this tune was also composed for the Colby College steel band. Somewhat similar to "Motor Scooter Monty" in style and energy, it was specifically written for ease and efficiency of learning, while maximizing the resulting musical fun. Based on three different Reggae styles (dance hall walk, one-drop, and ska), the energy varies from section to section. All parts are two pages or less. Written key signature of C (but tonally dwells in Dm and F).

This versatile arrangement can be played as a duet with tenor pan and piano, or as originally recorded, or with full steelband. Especially well-suited for smaller groups. Needs a strong tenor pan soloist and pianist; all other parts are relatively easy. Multiple keys.

This tune was composed for the album “CounterMelodies,” released in 2002. This arrangement is a very literal transcription of the original version of the tune, with the exception of the variation section, which takes the place of the improvised tenor pan solo in the original version.  This piece is a bit unusual in that the “head” of the tune is actually more complex than the variation section. A wonderful showcase for your extra-talented frontline players, and a strong, exciting finale to any program.

This suite is a real crowd pleaser. Challenging, but a blast to play, so your players will be highly motivated. Requires a very strong C-tenor pan soloist. Part 1 is Chopin's original watlz, adapted for pan, with the soloist playing the melody and the ensemble covering the "oom pah pahs." There is a seque into part 2, which is the "bomb" (calypso) adaptation. Building steadily to the end, this suite can really show off what your band can do! Key of C. With cuts indicated for short or long versions, this calypso really rolls along happily from beginning to end. Looking for something different? You should give this a try."

Based on a short, standard jazz chord progression, the piece reaches farther and farther "out" harmonically and melodically as it progresses, creating unique sonorities and chord voicings along the way, all the while keeping the listener's ear well grounded in the original structure. The package also contains combined double-seconds/cello part which could be used as one-player accompaniment (such as with a set of quads, or even on a keyboard instrument). Key of Gb.

Jazz Suite for Solo Vibraphone

$25

Advanced / College, adult

Solo vibraphone, with music

notated in both basic and

specific notation for some movements.

The movements are:

Bebop

Waltz

Ragtime

Ballade

Blues

This five-movement recital piece celebrates the unique qualities of the vibraphone with plenty of dampening and pedaling challenges. With an average movement length of about two-and-a-half minutes, the entire suite is a substantive work. Economical and colorful voicings support the melodic content, which is reminiscent of the original styles, but with a contemporary twist.

Three of the five movements are notated in two different versions to accommodate different levels of players. Each of these movements has a version with explicit dampening and pedaling instructions (for those less experienced with these techniques), and without. A detailed set of performer's notes is also provided.

See the composer perform the "Blues" movement HERE.
