GUEST
ARTIST-
CLINICIAN
Over 200 steel band organizations (schools, colleges, universities, non-profits) in the U.S. have hosted Gary Gibson as guest artist, clinician, and/or adjudicator. These include some of the most established steel band programs in the U.S., such as Northern Illinois University, Miami of Ohio University, Indiana University, Arizona State University, the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, the Virginia International PAN Fest, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Florida, the Great Lakes Steelpan Festival, Fields of Steel Steelband Festival (Tucson, AZ), Brigham Young University, Old Mill High School, Walla Walla University, University of Montana, Wichita State University, University of Texas at San Antonio, Lone Star College, San Jacinto College, North Harris Community College (Houston, TX), Richland College (Dallas, TX), the University of Washington, National Trail High School (New Paris, OH), and the Percussive Arts Society's All-Star steelband.
For live guest artist performances, concert programs are often a mixture of Gibson's own published (and some non-published) original and cover arrangements, along with some of the host band's existing material. In one or two rehearsals, with groups which have been praciticing the music on their own, concerts come together quick;ly. Gibson always strives to be a positive, educational, and fun guest artist, and has experience with steel bands at all levels (5th graders to adult). Oft-requested clinic topics include discussion of improvisation on steel pan, arranging for the steelband, engine room techniques, music business and music careers, the importance of being an ambassador for the instrument (steel pan), vibraphone technique, and general musicianship topics.
